HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

Next to Christmas, Halloween is my favourite holiday, because I get to dress up and pretend to be someone I'm not for a day - a real escape from reality. Haha!

This year, as much as I want to dress up as Fire Nation Toph, I opted to wear my HP get-up instead, and be a Hogwarts student for the nth time - yep, it never gets old... Next year, though, if I get the time and the money, I'll create my own Toph costume!

Have an awesome Halloween, everyone!!!

Your Wicked Garb 2012

It's less than a day before Halloween! Have you planned and prepared your costumes already? For those who haven't decided on who to be yet, it's not too late, and I'm here to help!

I came by this blog called Fan Fashions yesterday, and I thought about sharing it, as it is pure brilliance! From X-Men to The Avengers, from Avatar to Sherlock and Doctor Who, they have the perfect sets that you will be needing on Hallow's Eve - or even on an ordinary day!

They may not provide the most accurate pieces for you to be who you wish to be, but the colours, the make-up, and even the nail polish they mixed and matched inspired by the character you're going for are simply perfect!

I would say that they're rather fashionable. But then again, who doesn't want to be fashionable - if not scary - on Halloween?

Here are some of my favourite sets from Fan Fashion:

Chihiro from Spirited Away

Ivysaur from Pokemon

Jane from Disney's Tarzan

Sam Manson from Danny Phantom

Storm from X-Men

Amon from Avatar: The Legend of Korra
Captain America

Avatar Korra from Avatar: The Legend of Korra

Disney's Donald Duck

Simba from Disney's The Lion King

Tigger from Winnie the Pooh

Fire Lord Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender

Anastasia

Lin Bei Fong from Avatar: The Legend of Korra

The Roundup: First Semester, Sophomore Year

With less than a week left before school starts again, let me tell you about the highlights of my past semester. They're not really big compared to what other students my age have achieved , but for a non-genius weirdo who's always too lazy to study (that's me), these are milestones and I'm proud of them!

1. I PASSED ALL MY SUBJECTS THIS SEMESTER!
...and earned my first flat one! Woohoo! I'm also happy that I finally got a high grade in JRN, since I consistently got a grade of 2.75 in it last year.

2. MY ARTICLES GOT PUBLISHED ON BOTH ISSUES OF THE FLAME!
...one of which is written in Filipino. I had a nervous breakdown writing it.

3. I BECAME AN AIESECer!
...And made it to the Ongoing Exchange team :)

4. I GOT TO WATCH 3 UAAP GAMES!
...All in which UST lost, but that doesn't matter, because I really had fun before getting broken-hearted in the end of each game.

5. INKBLOTS!
...Can't put the incredible experience into words, so just read this post.

Since 1994

And so, I woke up this morning and realised that I turn 18 today. Can you believe it? Me 18? HAHA. Everything still seems like a big joke to me, really. How could I be 18, when I was just 17 yesterday, and 16 last year. Numbers are funny indeed.

Now, you may ask me how I'm planning to celebrate my 18th, since turning 18 is quite a big deal in the country I live in. Well, I made it clear to my family that I don't want anything at all. No gifts, no celebration, nothing. I want today to be an ordinary day - which they granted me - although, we had a simple family dinner last night (my parents insisted) and I still got a couple of gifts - pyjamas, cash, comic books, a grey sweater, and some of my other favourite things.

Today, we visited my Lolo's grave, and we'll be leading the rosary in our church this afternoon. My folks are cooking some dishes I requested, and I don't see anything wrong with that.

I'll check on you again, since I'm kinda busy watching Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 on HBO right now. It's the only way to ease my Post-Potter Depression.

Inkblots 2012

Just when I thought I'll be stuck at home doing nothing this sem-break, I was lucky enough to be chosen by my editor (hi, Ate Trish! Thanks again!) to represent the literary section of The Flame to Inkblots 2012 - a national campus journalism fellowship hosted by the official student publication of UST, The Varsitarian.

God, it was awesome!

I couldn't exactly put into words how much I've learned and enjoyed the three days of Inkblots. On top of that, we got to meet a lot of personalities in the field of journalism.

On Day 1, we had former senator Aquilino Pimentel Jr. for the opening remarks. He also discussed the peace process with us. I missed the news writing session with Christian Esguerra, as I had to complete my NSTP requirements. We then had a panel discussion on literature with comical author Eros Atalia, Palanca Award winner Carlomar Daoana, and our dear Sr. Ferdie Lopez. The last speaker of the day was GMA's reporter/news anchor Mariz Umali. God, she's so beautiful! She was also kind enough to allow photo-ops and autographs.

Day 2 was the most fun for me, because we had Photo Journalism, Filipino Journalism (which I missed due to our enrolment), Sports Writing, Cartooning, and Catholic Journalism and Journalism Ethics.

I was blown away by the photos taken by The Associated Press Photographer Aaron Favila. Man, he's so keen on the details! Go Google him - you'll be impressed!

We also had fun in Sports Writing with well-renowned sports writer Quinito Henson! He invited Petron's Arwind Santos and Alex Cabignot over for a mini-press-con, and we had to write a sports article about what we picked up during the conference. What pushed us all to write were the prizes for the 10 best articles - autographed basketballs, jackets, shirts, mobile phones (yes, mobile phones!), and a lot more! Every prize was a sports showcase anybody - even those who don't like sports as much (like me) - would like to win. Of course, I wasn't picked. Haha!

We then had parallel sessions on Layout and Cartooning. I originally signed up for layout, but I really wanted to attend the cartooning sessions, so I sneaked out. We had award-winning editorial cartoonist/children's book illustrator Jess Abrera as our speaker. I have a few words for the man: HE IS SO COOL!!!

I've always wanted to be an artist growing up, but unfortunately, I don't have the skills for it, so I resorted to writing. Anyhow, I still enjoyed the cartooning session. We were taught how to show expressions in our illustrations; the symbols we had to use to show reaction, and everything in between. After the session, we were allowed to have photos taken with Jess and his son Manix. They also signed autographs and drew a bit :)

I didn't stay too long for the last session, Catholic Journalism and Journalism Ethics with Nikolo Baua, Fr. Nick Lalog, and Christian Esguerra, as I was already fetched by my aunt, although I learned a thing or two in the talk.

Day 3 - the last day - kicked off with a Campus Paper Management session with Eldric Paul Peredo. We then had Opinion-Editorial with Marichu Villanueva and Research in Journalism with Felipe Salvosa II. Our last session for Day 3 and the whole of Inkblots 2012 is Feature Writing with Manila Bulletin's Entertainment Associate Editor and The Flame Adviser (yes, I feel the need to state that!) Sr. Nestor Cuartero, wherein we had to write a feature article about the celebrity guest he invited over - BJ "Tolits" Forbes, who will be playing the second Filipino saint, San Pedro Calungsod, in a stage production.

Before the closing remarks, it was very timely that award-winning script writer, Ricky Lee, was in our university at the time and he agreed to deliver a short message to us.

During our last night, we also had a dinner to have some more fun.

I wish I could explain more about Inkblots, but there's just about a million great things about it that I can't afford to write in here right now, so I'll just state some reasons you should join next year's Inkblots.

REASONS YOU SHOULD JOIN INKBLOTS 2013

-It's the 15th Inkblots Campus Journalism Fellowship of UST, and it will surely be bigger and better  - with fireworks!

-A lot of universities and colleges all over the country will participate. It's the perfect chance to make new friends or to build your network.

-You'll learn a lot of things beyond the walls of your classroom.

-The food. There are a lot of snack breaks!

-Nobody goes home empty-handed. There are loads of freebies and prizes to be won!

-It's FUN! (Do I have to say more?)

-You'll get to meet a lot of personalities in the field of journalism, and learn from their experiences.

-Celebrities also drop over.

-To fill in your 3 idle sem-break days with info, techniques, and what not!

-Your P1,500 (if that's still the price) will be super sulit!

*This list goes on :)

Gene Yang Made My Day

After an awesome Day 2 of Inkblots - which I'll be telling you about soon enough - I was so thrilled to check my inbox tonight to find out that Mr. Gene Yang - ALA award-winning author for American Born Chinese (the first graphic novel to win such honour) and author of other graphic novels including the Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Promise Trilogy - replied to the email I sent him a few days back.

Considering his busy schedule (he's currently working on the new Avatar trilogy, "The Search", which focuses on the royal Fire Nation family and the spiritual side of Avatar), I wasn't really expecting a reply. But reading his short message for me is simply... wow. I couldn't really find the perfect words to say! Just the fact that he took his time to reply to me is enough. Not a lot of authors do that these days, so I'm really, really thankful to him!

Flameo, Gene!

Stargirls Meet-up!

It's a good Thursday for me.

I met my high school Stargirls Felis and Lanie, and we had a blast. It's been a while since we last met, and we just couldn't stop talking, laughing, taking pictures, and that kind of stuff. We just had some catching up to do and six hours is barely enough for all of us.

Good Morning!

It's just 11 o'clock in the morning (hence, the title), but here I am... already piled with work - again - but I won't go ranting about that right now. I'm smart enough to spend my time conceptualizing rather than complaining. After all, I'm having a good morning. D'you know why? Cos ^THIS^ came in my mail today.

It's quite a surprise, actually, since I'm not expecting it to arrive so soon - even sooner than the first two parts which have been shipped a week before Part 3. I'm starting to worry about them, but whatever, Amazon will be held accountable for such error... maybe. I really don't know, since it's my first time to purchase something from Amazon.

And, just so you know, in case you don't follow Innocent Wild on Facebook, we're already on Tumblr!!! Yes, Tumblr! I've been having a really great time, and I wish I joined sooner, because seeing people APPRECIATE my effort to keep the site updated is just... wow. It's awesome! And I've earned followers overnight!
