Book Review: When You Reach Me

Having my usual after-exam run at the book shop a few weeks ago, I decided to buy "When You Reach Me" by Rebecca Stead, for a few reasons: 1. I didn't like the recommended books at the YA section at the moment 2. I've always wanted to read it and 3. It's finally available! (It used to be out-of-stock whenever I enquired at the customer's service)

Miranda is a twelve-year-old girl living in New York with her mum. She and her best friend, Sal, know how to navigate their neighbourhood - where it's safe to go and who to avoid along the way, including the laughing man on the corner.

Everything was perfectly normal, until Sal gets punched by a kid on the street for no reason at all, and he  shuts Miranda out of his life. The apartment key Miranda's mum keeps hidden also gets lost, and mysterious notes addressed to Miranda start to appear in the most unexpected of places.

Soon enough, Miranda realises that the notes actually carry proofs that even the most impossible things could become a reality.

When You Reach Me is one of the best young adult novels with a roller coaster of a twist I've read. It's witty, it's gripping, and it's complex - the perfect ingredients for a full-fledged children's mystery novel.
