Good Morning!

The flowers in my garden are lookin' good! The birds are chirping everywhere. And, the sun's up high in the sky, giving everything and everyone else below a warm kiss. So... GOOD MORNING!

Apart from the hypochondria and anxiety attacks of mine over the past few days and the headache that had been scaring me to the point of driving me mad, I'm all right.

I just made it to the official paper of the Faculty of Arts and Letters of my university, which is totally AWESOME, as I didn't expect to get through, with all the other talented writers trying out. My novel's chapters are progressing. And, I think my sunflowers are about to bloom - I swear! They're flower buds!

Have a good morning as well, Innocent Wild readers!

Happy Earth Day!

Going Green 101

1. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. It never gets old.

2. On holiday trips, never forget to unplug all your electronic devices at home.

3. Plant a tree.

4. Grow your own herb garden, so you won't have to take a trip to the supermarket when all you need is basil or rosemary.

5. Rescue a pet! If you don't want to purchase a pet from a shop or breeder, adopt one from a shelter.

6. Place a brick or two inside the toilet tank. It saves water used for flushing.

7. Buy organic food.

8. Take a reusable bottle of water with you wherever you go - less waste, less cost.

9. Buy eco-friendly clothing made from 100% cotton.

10. Bring your own shopping bag when you have to do your shopping runs.

11. Collect rain water in a container for later use - it's great for watering plants.

12. Maximize the use of baking soda! It's also a smart substitute for fancy cleaning products.

Going green is not simple. It requires a bit of sacrifice and a bit of work too - changing your environmentally-unconscious habits and all that. But when you start taking these tiny steps towards a greener future, your efforts of saving Mother Earth will pay off.

A Day In The Life

Clearly enough, this blog's title is Innocent Wild: In the Wicked Life of a Middle Class Princess. But, I reckon that I've never posted anything in here that told you much about my life (as if you care much!). I always post reviews, celebrity news, things I like, and what not, but nothing about my wicked life. (Oh, by the way, when I say wicked, I mean two things: wicked as in "cool" and wicked as in "evil" or "bad" - the meanings depend entirely on my mood.) So, yesterday, I decided to take the "A Photo an Hour" challenge. I just thought that it would best explain how I spend my day.

6 AM - What you're seeing is my mum's bike
and my grandmum's bougainvillea.

7 AM - A part of our sitting room. The sunshine
through the window's simply gorgeous!

8 AM - BREAKFAST TIME! Mum's French toast and my
cold coffee :)

9 AM - this is the time when I bug around ma
while she's gardening. She hates my annoying
presence.

10 AM - the mess is finally cleaned up!

11 AM - took this very random photo of an
old pot on an old cement grill. This is where
we do cook our ancient meals.

12 NN - Rich green foliage.

1 PM - LUNCH! My mum and I had lunch at John and Yoko
since we're out and about for the day.

 2 PM - 3 PM
No pictures for these hours! We were at the cinema watching
Zac Efron's "The Lucky One". My mum is a big fan of Zac :))

4 PM - Colourful and lovely perfume bottles at a shop we saw

5 PM - you've had enough of my ugly face -
I KNOW! But the challenge ends with a photo
of the challenger :)

Book Review: Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

Kathy, Tommy, and Ruth are special, as well as the other students at Hailsham, a boarding school in East Sussex, England.

They play. They paint. They make poetry. They stay healthy. And, they develop friendships and intimate relationships as they grow older. Although, no matter how normal these activities may seem, Hailsham and the children she houses are not of the ordinary.

"Never Let Me Go" by internationally-acclaimed and award-winning Japanese-born British novelist Kazuo Ishiguro is a haunting novel of innocence, love, and loss, narrated by the 31 year-old main character, Kathy H. The story is divided in three sections, namely Childhood, Adult, and Donor.

In Childhood, the reader is invited to take a peak at the kind of life children at Hailsham lived - how they were encouraged to write poetry and create artworks for "Madame's Gallery" - a collection of the best works that contain soul, and how they were kept at peak health. It was later revealed that the children of Hailsham are reared by their teachers or "Guardians" for a very uncommon reason: they are cloned in order to provide vital organs for non-clones. Before they reach they reach the height of their adulthood, they must be able to complete their donations.

The reader also gets to meet the three main characters of the story in Childhood: Kathy, Ruth and Tommy. Kathy is a kind and passive young girl, whereas Ruth is her complete opposite - extremely bossy and idealistic. Tommy is an ill-tempered bullied young boy with awful art skills. As the story progresses, they develop a close friendship.

In their adolescent years, sexual tension grows, and Ruth and Tommy engage into an intimate relationship. They soon break up, but Ruth talks Kathy through to help her patch up her relationship with Tommy.

The second part of the story, Adult, begins when Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy are young adults, and are sent to live in the "Cottages" to begin their contact outside the confines of Hailsham. There, they meet "veterans" - experienced people of their kind - who help them cope with the external world.

Ruth and Tommy reunite, as Kathy explores her sexuality with other students at the cottages, fearing the urge of having sex with just about anybody. During their stay, Rodney and Chrissie, two veterans the three are closest with, tell Ruth that they saw her "Possible" (the person she's copied from) at an office at Norfolk. They then travel to the place the veterans were saying, only to find out that the woman at the office is not Ruth's possible. Dismayed, Ruth had an outburst and claimed that they were moulded from trash.

It was also in Adult where the "Deferrals" are introduced to the reader. While on their Norfolk day trip, Chrissie and Rodney mention something about being able to defer, which could postpone a donation, so one could be together with the person they love for a little while - that is if they could prove that they're really in love.

The idea of "Deferrals" affected Tommy the most, as he failed to express his soul back in Hailsham when he struggled with creativity. In his theory, only those who were artistic enough to get picked for "Madame's Gallery" would be able to defer, for they were able to prove that they have soul in them. Sticking to his theory, Tommy draws once again, trying to be creative, so if one day he wanted to get deferred, he could show his drawings to Madame, and prove to her that he has a soul after all.

In Donor, Kathy is already a carer - someone who takes care of people who do donations - and she's good at it. At some point, she decides to become the carer of Ruth, who is not doing well after her second donation. Together, they were reminiscing their old times, when Ruth brought the topic about a boat on land. She said that a lot of donors have been there before, and she wishes to see it with Kathy and Tommy, who has already made his third donation.

Kathy makes arrangements with Tommy's carer and centre, so he could come with them, and the three of them went. Later, frailer than ever, Ruth hands Kathy and Tommy a piece of paper with an address on it, and tells them to go see Madame and apply for a deferral. She completes her third donation, and Kathy and Tommy are all alone.

Kathy eventually becomes Tommy's carer, and they made love as much as possible, so when they apply for a deferral, Madame would see the passion and love existing between them. Kathy already checked on the address Ruth gave them, and learned that it was the right place.

Soon, Kathy and Tommy went to Madame's home to finally get deferred. Tommy brought along with him a few of his best drawings, which he never ceased to make, to prove his soul. But, much to their dismay, they found out that there was no such thing as a deferral, and that it was only a rumour.

Kathy stops being Tommy's carer, and he completes his fourth donation. The book ends with Kathy about to start making her donations.

There's more to this story that I just couldn't write in here. It's this beautifully-written devastating elegy that takes the reader to a celebration of love and life, no matter how sad the story is. I, personally, couldn't put the book down the moment I started reading it. And the best part: it's not your ordinary sci-fi-love story. Again, Kazuo Ishiguro authenticates his craft as one of the best story-tellers of today with "Never Let Me Go".

Happy Birthday, Emma Watson!

Yep, the girl who cast a spell on millions and millions of Potterheads all over the world will be blowing 22 candles today!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, EMMA WATSON!!!

And to celebrate her 22nd birthday here on Innocent Wild, check out set photos (taken at Venice Beach) from her new flick "The Bling Ring" directed by Sofia Coppola and co-stars Leslie Mann, Taissa Farmiga, and Gavin Rossdale.

"The Bling Ring" is a film inspired by true events and is about California teen burglars, also known as the "Hollywood Hills Burglar Bunch", who used the internet to track the whereabouts of big celebrities like Orlando Bloom, Lindsay Lohan, and Paris Hilton, and robbed their houses when they're not home. By October 2008-August 2009, the Hollywood Hills Burglar Bunch were able to steal belongings and cash worth $3 million. They were soon busted at Lindsay Lohan's home.

"The Bling Ring" is set to be released in theatres in 2013.

Good Morning!

Well, I must say that I still couldn't get over with last night's show of American Idol.

First off, I just can't believe that Joshua and Jessica are in the bottom 3, though they're not my favourites. They're really strong competitors of this season - frontrunners even! Second, JESSICA WAS ALMOST ELIMINATED?! Third, J Lo actually got on the stage and took the microphone out of Jessica's hand as she was singing the 'save me' song to pull her to the 'safe' side. Whoah. It was just too much to handle, even though I've already known since morning yesterday what's going to happen (I read live blogs).

Sometimes, I even get the feeling that the whole results show was staged, as though they didn't want the 'save' to be used on any other contestant but Jessica, so they "cut" her and used the 'save' on her. It could also be a vote boost for Jessica, as her fans would be picking up their phones every Thursday night just to make sure that their favourite won't get eliminated...again. Press releases by TMZ and tweets from the producers and Ryan before the show about a shocking result just added up to lessen the falseness of the scenario.

However, it could also be the fact that the voting demographic that matters. The biggest viewers of the show are teenage girls, and teenage girls don't vote for teenage girls with big voices! They vote for cute guys! This season, we have Phillip and Colton, who'll surely stay in the competition long enough because they have the profile of the past winners - they're white guys who play instruments! I know that I'm in no position to judge the show I've been watching for years and years now, but there's just something in the show last night that seemed off.

On the other side of my head, BRANGELINA ARE ENGAGED!

Sweet Summer Snack: Stewed Bananas

This classic Filipino merienda dish is one of my favourites, and I just thought it would be nice to share the recipe with you all, since it's simple and very cheap to make.

SWEET STEWED BANANAS

-10 semi-ripe cooking bananas (saba)
-2 cups brown sugar
-4 cups water
-3 cups sago pearls
-Pandan Leaves

1. Wash the bananas and peel them - their peels are kinda tough, so you might need the help of a knife in this one.
2.Slice each banana diagonally into bite-sized pieces.
3. In a sauce pan over fire, add half a cup of brown sugar and then pour 1 cup of water just before the sugar caramelises. The sugar will harden, so just leave it to melt and boil.
4. Add the bananas into the boiling sugar mixture, as well as the remaining 3 cups of water and 3 and a half cups of brown sugar.
5. Place a few pandan leaves into the stew for aroma.
6. Pour in the sago pearls - wash them first by soaking them in boiling water to kill bacteria.
7. Leave to boil for a few more minutes until the bananas are soft enough to bite.
8. Serve chilled or with crushed ice.

*This merienda dish is also great for rainy seasons, as you can serve them warm :)

Easter Sunday...

Last Easter Sunday, we visited our folks in Manila, to check how my grandaunt’s doing and to celebrate my cousin Roy’s 7th month as well. God, he’s so adorable, plus he’s taller – erm, longer – now! And what’s awesome about him is that he doesn’t cry at all! He’s such a happy baby, and he just goes with anybody who’s carrying him. He’s growing some teeth too! It’s really amazing how these baby miracles happen.

Directed by Lenny Bass, this heart-warming new music video featuring Kris Allen's latest single "The Vision of Love" is the one to watch - and play! - this holy season (time to change and stand for the vision of love, y'all!). The music video was shot in Los Angeles last month, and it revolves around troubled teenagers, all facing social pressures.

Perfectly, Perhaps

Well, let me just say that things are ticking perfectly around me right now...

1. I passed all my subjects this semester, which can be considered as a miracle for I never thought I'd pass maths - bloody maths.

2. My cousin  graduated in high school, and will be taking dentistry

3. I wore a skirt, and didn't feel bad about it at all.

4. I chopped my hair - again - and my head feels lighter.

5. I successfully knotted a cherry stem with my tongue for the first time after years and years of unfruitful attempts.

6. My summer will be summer school-free

7. And best of all: I was able to write a sensible-somewhat-autobiographical article about my childhood in just 2 hours.

And Then We All Grew Up

And then we all grew up. No more dusty hands. No more toppled cans and missing slippers. No more winners. No more losers. After many years of silly games and playing pretend, it’s just life.

One by one, we went. The oldest of us all went first. Said he’d become a nurse, and he did. Another took the same path, but she’s not working in the hospital; took some other job somewhere. Then there was the smartest among us. Said she’d become a doctor, and she’s working on it. The ten years hasn’t passed yet, but she never failed to impress us whenever she visits, toting medals and achievements with her to display in her old home. She was the third one who left.

There were a few years interval before another went. We were still young and we still played, but we were not as naïve anymore. The puberty bug bit us all, and there was no cure for it. Our bodies started to change, just as how the seasons passed.

Together, we, the girls, teased the boys whose voices squeaked and broke every now and then. The boys, consequently, teased us girls as our chests began to develop. No, scratch that. The boys, consequently, teased the other girls as their chests began to develop. Sadly, I still have a flat chest.

When it was time for the oldest boy remaining in our group to have his circumcision, there were a lot of questions hanging around. For the other boys, it was “Did it hurt?”, for they knew that they were up next the following summer. For the girls, it was “Why do they have to undergo such a thing?” But most of the time, it would be “I wonder how it looks like…”

Then when one of us girls had her first period, it was all questions too. But unlike the thick fog of curiosity that wrapped around the mysterious circumcision, it was something more private to talk about, and only the ones with the guts to ask asked. “How does it feel like when you have it?” It was a boy who asked that, and he got a slap on the face as an answer.

We all became moodier. We all became smellier. We all grew pimples. And with all the older kids (who would probably have answers to lessen our anxieties) in college, we were simply clueless.

Shortly after the oldest boy felt like he was already a real man, he got sick of us babies, and didn’t play with us again. Like the three, he also went. But being the notorious one and the un-smartest one, he trudged a rough road, chose the life of rock n roll over books. What he’s been through, we don’t know. We only heard little about what he’s up to. We never talked about him either, but in our hearts, we always knew him as our kuya, our oldest brother, and we felt sorry for him.

There were six of us left, and it was I who’ll have to go next. Deep down, I always knew that my time to leave the group would come one way or another. There was no running away from that fact. But my head repelled all the thoughts about growing up. I refused to grow up. Playtime had been so much fun that I just couldn’t let go of it in exchange of high school text books then college thesis. I just couldn’t get how the first four were able to stop being a kid and face the real world like an adult.

                Will there be signs?

                Will people make me?

                Or, will I just know?

But whatever it is, I didn’t bother much thinking about it. At the moment, I was their ate, their eldest sister, and it was my job not to make them feel even more awful as we begin to diminish in number. I had to make them feel that I was there for them.

I grew taller, looked weirder, and our games carried on. But that was until I faced the demands of high school – both social and academic. Bit by bit, I lost time for them, my friends, my playmates, my little brothers and sisters. More and more, I missed playtime. And without me in the picture anymore, I just didn’t have any idea how they were doing now. I was the fifth one to leave, and I’m going to be a writer – I think.

Over time, I’ve learned very little about how the other five did. One stopped school – got expelled, actually, but he’s enjoying his grade-free life. One moved out with her family, escaping her father’s countless debts in town. Another turned out to be a beauty with guys falling on her feet, while the youngest became the social climber. And the closest to me, will be taking dentistry when school kicks off after the summer.

So you see, we’re all doing fine, whatever fine means. Fate brought us together, then broke us into pieces once again for some reason. Time passes, everything changes. Some become successful, while some become…not-so successful. And, others just turn out in the most unexpected of ways. It’s the sad truth that everybody seems to deny. But at the end of the day, we all started as kids, and then we all grew up. No more dusty hands. No more toppled cans and missing slippers. No more winners. No more losers. After many years of silly games and playing pretend, it’s just life.

Happy April Fools!

HaPpY ApRiL Fo0Ls!!!

I don't have much pranks in mind right now, and that's not normal. Jell-O-filled glasses; drawing on sleeping people's faces; turning pictures and frames upside-down - they're all getting old, my grand parents must've even pulled them way back when, so I might as well invent more original pranks...at my own risk, of course!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRED AND GEORGE!!!

Today, is also a very special day for Potterheads, as Fred and George - two of the most iconic and hottest characters of the whole series - are celebrating their birthday today! Ah, I miss these two. I think I want me some HP movie marathon later. Oh, well.
