How-To: Newsie Nails

As a journalist-in-the-making, having a newspaper stuck in my fingertips is pretty normal, but having them on my fingernails is a different story. Let me show you one of my favourite nail art techniques, which I like to call "Newsy Nails".

Newsie-fying nails is pretty easy too, so worry not about the complicated steps and mess! Let me tell you how to do it :)

Newsie Nails

What You Need:

Plain White/Matte Grey Nail Lacquer
Base Coat Nail Lacquer (Optional)
Colourless Nail Lacquer (for Top Coat)
Scissors
Newspaper
Cotton Balls
Cotton Swabs
Nail Polish Remover
Rubbing Alcohol

How-To:

1. Cut small rectangular pieces of newspaper that are just about the size of your nails.
***Be creative! Don't limit yourself to the text part of the newspaper. You can cut parts from comic strips, crossword puzzle and sudoku answers, like what I did.***

2. Set the pieces of newspaper aside, and wash your hands to eliminate news paper ink stained on your skin. Dry your hands thoroughly before proceeding to the next step.

3. Apply a base coat on your nails. This step is optional, and you can skip to the second step if you don't have a base coat lacquer with you at the moment.

4. Brush two to three layers of plain white or grey nail lacquer.

5. Once the layers of nail lacquer have dried, damp a cotton ball with alcohol, place a piece of newspaper on top of your nail, and press the cotton ball firmly against it for about five seconds.

6. Carefully peel the newspaper from your nail. You should be able to see the ink transferred onto your nail.

7. Repeat step 5 and 6 for every nail.

8. Apply a top coat onto your nails to protect the ink and to give it some gloss.

9. Let your nails dry thoroughly.

10. Remove the excess nail lacquer on your fingers with a cotton swab and some nail polish remover.
